| Description: | This Suzan Lovett drawing accompanies the story "A Unicorn Affair", published in Playfellows #8. It showcases one of Lovett's more popular styles, the picture tableau, which uses dense and classical, often symbolic imagery to tell multiple stories visually. The center image focuses on the story's main theme with Ilya sleeping, covered in fairies and being watched over by a unicorn. The poor resolution of the image scan makes it difficult to make out details, however like many of Lovett's tableaus, the image borders contain symmetrical images. To the left, Ilya stands in the pose of David's Michaelango. Above him is a wolf symbolizing the character's Russian ties. To the right, partially obscured, is Napoleon and above him flies an eagle symbolizing America. As with most of Lovett's tableaus, the art piece invites multiple viewings to parse the layers of meaning. |
