Ava's Demon is a webcomic.

About

Ava's Demon is a science fantasy webcomic by Michelle Fus that blends sci-fi and psychological horror. Starting in 2012, Ava's Demon is known for its intimate character focus, dreamlike visuals, and psychological horror themes.[1] The first physical publication of Ava's Demon was released in 2013 after a successful Kickstarter project, and another Kickstarter in 2020 became the most-backed webcomic Kickstarter at the time. In 2020, the campaign for Ava's Demon: Reborn raised over $530,000, setting a new record at that time.[2] Later, in 2022, the Ava's Demon: Book Two campaign surpassed this, raising $648,075, reaffirming its position at the top.[3] The webcomic is praised for its cinematic storytelling, vibrant visuals, and emotional depth, making it one of the most notable independent webcomics.

Premise

Ava’s Demon is set in the year 3031 AD, in a universe where interplanetary travel and advanced medical science have allowed some individuals to obtain god-like powers through technology.[4] The story follows Ava Ire, a troubled teenager who has been tormented since birth by a mysterious entity named Wrathia. Unlike an ordinary hallucination, Wrathia can briefly possess Ava, forcing her to scream violent insanities and urging her toward self-destruction.

Everything changes when Ava comes close to death. At that moment, Wrathia finally reveals the truth—she is not just a demon, but the ghost of an alien queen, once the ruler of a powerful empire now reduced to ashes. Wrathia offers Ava a pact, a binding agreement that would fuse them more closely together. But there is a price: Ava must help Wrathia defeat Titan, a seemingly benevolent but all-powerful being who commands legions of followers and was responsible for destroying Wrathia’s people.

As Ava embarks on this perilous journey, she soon discovers she is not alone—others also bear demons, spirits of Wrathia’s fallen allies, each seeking their own vengeance. With the fate of the universe hanging in the balance, Ava is thrust into a battle far greater than herself, forced to navigate the blurred lines between gods and monsters, vengeance and survival.

Development

Inspiration

Michelle Fus’ Ava’s Demon was inspired by a mix of personal experiences, artistic influences, and a desire for creative independence. Growing up, she saw art as an impractical career due to economic struggles and the dominance of big companies in the industry. However, with the rise of the internet, she recognized the potential for independent artists to reach audiences directly, bypassing traditional publishers.[5]

Her storytelling approach was shaped by an internship at Pixar, where she learned the fundamentals of character-driven narratives. She aimed to create characters that people could connect with—characters who have desires and struggles. The world of Ava’s Demon is a collage of influences from films like The Fifth Element, Alien, and Kubrick’s work, alongside elements she wished to see in comics but hadn’t before.

Initially created in her spare time between work and sleep, Ava’s Demon has since grown into a major success, raising over half a million dollars through Kickstarter.[6] Beyond financial and artistic success, Fus hopes her work inspires others to create comics, embrace their artistic passions, and bring more life and color into the world.

Kickstarter Campaigns

Michelle Fus has launched four successful Kickstarter campaigns to fund the production and continuation of Ava's Demon: June 2013 – Ava's Demon: Book One: This initial campaign aimed to publish a 9"x9" hardcover book containing the first 500 panels of the webcomic. It surpassed its goal, raising $217,036 from 3,756 backers. [7] 2015 – Ava's Demon: Book Two: The second campaign focused on publishing the next installment and reprinting the first volume. It successfully raised $351,076 from 3,729 backers. [8] September 2020 – Ava's Demon: Reborn: This campaign aimed to republish the series with Skybound Entertainment, offering a new hardcover edition of the first volume. It became the most-funded webcomic Kickstarter project at the time bringing in $530,310. [9] November 2024 – Ava's Demon: Aftermath: The most recent campaign sought to continue Ava's adventures with the publication of Books 1 and 2. It concluded successfully in November 2022, raising $648,198 setting a new record for not only the most-funded webcomic Kickstarter project at the time but also the most-funded webcomic series of all time. [10] These campaigns have collectively garnered substantial support, enabling the ongoing development and publication of Ava's Demon.
