Fyodor Dostoevsky, named for the author of Crime and Punishment, is a major villain in Bungou Stray Dogs and a popular character in the fandom.
In Canon
Fyodor first appears in the main manga and second season of the anime in connection to Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald as the one whose computer skills prevent Akutagawa and Atsushi from safely landing the Moby Dick.
In Dead Apple, he pretends to conspire with Dazai and Shibusawa, well aware that Dazai plans to betray them. His ability, Crime and Punishment, does not turn against him, unlike most others'. He betrays Shibusawa, unleashing Shibusawa's dragon form.
By the start of season 2, he has been captured by the Port Mafia, where Ace attempts to enslave him using Ace's ability as the stakes for a card game. Fyodor wins, kills Ace, and kills Karma to eliminate the evidence. When the ADA and Port Mafia team up to defeat the Rats in the House of the Dead and end the cannibalism virus, Fyodor is not at the base, but Dazai finds him in a café. Fyodor is escorted away to Mersault prison, where he continues to mastermind the Decay of Angels and is later joined in confinement by Dazai. Both are freed from their cells by Nikolai Gogol, who makes them compete in an only-one-will-live prison escape game with the antidote to a poison as the reward. With the aid of vampires and Nakahara Chuuya disguised as a vampire, Fyodor reaches the exit first, but a vampire in the getaway helicopter kills him. This is the extent of his appearance thus far in the anime. In the manga, it is revealed that Crime and Punishment means the body of someone who kills him becomes his body, and, since the vampire was only a tool in Bram Stoker's control, Bram's body becomes Fyodor's. A vestige of Bram makes Fyodor protective of Aya.
In Fandom
Much Fyodor analysis revolves around his religious views and how they impact his schemes, which some interpret as him having a god complex or a messiah complex, the latter having become more popular than the first over time. He is often analyzed along the lines of his Jesus parallels.[1]
His similar appearance to Mori Ougai leads to jokes that they are related,[2] though not to serious theorizing.
Fanart and discussions of him sometimes include parallels with Viktor from Arcane[3][4] and events in Gravity Falls.
"Rasputin" is a common song choice for AMVs of him.
There was a boom in the creation of Fyodor-centric content and theorizing following the release of manga chapters 114 and 115. Following the latter, he trended third on Tumblr, with the only higher-trending tags being Pride Month-related.[5] Redraws of him chained to the dungeon wall became fairly popular and depicting him in his new outfit became extremely popular.
Shipping
He is most frequently shipped with Nikolai (Fyolai), followed by Dazai (Fyozai). He is also sometimes shipped with Nikolai and Sigma (the Decay Trio, AKA Fyosiglai), with Sigma alone, with both Dazai and Nikolai, or with Shibusawa. Chapter 113, in which it is revealed he met Bram hundreds of years ago and their positions are similar to Dazai and Chuuya's in their first main manga meeting, led to a short-lived boom in Fyobram shipping. It was also followed by a fad for shipping him with Jesus (see below).[6]
Fan Theories
Prior to the reveal of Fyodor's ability, which came long after his introduction, there was much theorizing about what it was. Theories included that it killed all those he touched, it killed those who came in contact with his blood, or it killed by weighing a person's wrongdoings or the wrongs they thought they had committed (Crime) and inflicting damage for them (Punishment). A small number of fans claim to have correctly or mostly correctly predicted Fyodor's ability.
One fan theory is that Fyodor is Nakajima Atsushi's father, and he is sometimes portrayed as such in fan works. He is also sometimes portrayed as a father figure to Karma or Aya.[7][8]
Fyodor and Jesus
Because Fyodor has been alive for untold centuries and has a complicated relationship with Christianity, it is sometimes theorized that he knew Jesus, sometimes with the addendums that he was Judas and/or had a situationship with Jesus,[9][10][11] or even that he is Jesus.[12][13][14][15] This is often, but far from always, a joke. He is sometimes depicted as Jesus in art[16][17][18] or with associated symbols, such as a lamb who is sometimes Sigma[19] or Nikolai. Some fans see this theory, and fan works which draw parallels between him and Jesus, as disrespectful to Christianity.[20]
Fyodor is sometimes shipped with Jesus[21] in posts and art but very rarely in fic. This ship, known as Fyosus or Jesusdor, has created fandom controversy, with some saying it is sacrilegious and disrespectful. One popular artist associated with Fyodor removed their Fyosus art from Instagram and issued a formal apology.[22] The controversy may be why this ship's popularity seems to have declined dramatically after a brief boom.[23]
The theory that Fyodor is Jesus, while still relatively uncommon as a headcanon, has become increasingly popular following BSD chapters 114 and 115, in which Fyodor dies while saying Jesus' words on the cross and then is resurrected by his ability. Less controversial is that, regardless of what the truth is, Asagiri has Fyodor intentionally draw parallels between himself and Jesus,[24] and that this is likely tied to how Fyodor views his ability. These parallels can also lead fans to make comparisons between Fyolai and Jesus Christ/Judas Iscariot[25] or Nikolai or another of Fyodor's subordinates[26] to Judas in a non-shipping light.
Related and less common are the theories that Fyodor is Judas or that Kafka Asagiri was inspired by the story of Cartophilius while creating Fyodor.[27]

- ^ Fyodor Will Be Fine analysis post by @hamliet Excerpt: "Fyodor as Jesus Fyodor's last words are "My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?" aka Jesus' last words (or among his last words). I mean, think about what happens after Jesus dies. It's kinda the whole basis of Christianity. But there's another layer to the whole Fyodor=Jesus thing. Actually, a couple layers. See, Dostoyevsky was himself very Christian, as much theologian as novelist. So the comparison very much makes sense. Jesus is the Son of God in Christianity... and Fyodor? He's also the son of God." @hamliet goes on to theorize that Fyodor's divine father figure will appear as a character and is Leo Tolstoy, who has yet to appear in canon.
