Gringolet is Sir Gawain's horse and a fan-favorite minor character in the Arthuriana fandom.
In Medieval Literature
Gringolet appears in Sir Gawain and The Green Knight. In one text, Gawain acquires him by stealing him from a Saxon named Clarion;[1] in another, from Morholt. In the Roman Van Walewein, Gringolet kills a dragon.[2]
In Fandom
Gringolet is very popular among fans, appearing in artwork, fics, and ask games.[3] How often he appears in fic s difficult to determine because, as a horse character, he is not always tagged for. He is sometimes depicted as distinct from a normal horse, with attributes such as fangs or aquatic webbing to signify that he is a kelpie, demon,[4] or similarly dangerous magical creature.[5] He is often referred to as a "murder horse", "demon horse",[6] or by similar terms.
Some fans like Gringolet more than Gawain himself or are more enthusiastic about Gawain because of Gringolet.[2][7]
