Maki Harukawa is a prominent and popular character in the Dangan Ronpa series. She debuted in Dangan Ronpa V3: Killing Harmony.
Canon Background
Maki Harukawa has two different canonical backstories, as The Mastermind of the Killing Game in V3 is said to have fabricated one for her before the start of the game.
Whether Harukawa's personality was actually fabricated or not is never stated as fact, however, fitting with the game's truth vs. fiction theme. There's been plenty of meta on the subject.
Fabricated Personality
Maki Harukawa is introduced as a child caregiver. However, later on, it is revealed that she is actually the Ultimate Assassin (Super High School Level Assassin in original Japanese release). She recalls being raised in an orphanage, who trained her into becoming an assassin, and having to take care of the younger kids there.
During the game, she's initially very hostile and cold towards her classmates, becoming less hostile later on in the game. Her real ultimate is revealed in Chapter 2, and she is defended by Kaito Momota, leading to her developing a crush on him. His friendship with her and his death in Chapter 4 are the turning points in her character arc.
Harukawa's birthday is February 2nd. This is "Twintail Day" in Japan, something which may be referenced in fanworks. On Twitter and Pixiv, art tagged with #春川魔姫生誕祭[year value] are commonly released on her birthday.
Pre-Game Personality
Maki Harukawa was an average teenage girl as well as a massive fan of the Dangan Ronpa series, an in-universe reality TV show. She auditioned for the show's 53rd season (stylized as V3) and made the cut to participate in a killing game. In fanworks, this is considered to be her pre-game personality. Like with every other V3 student, all of this info is filtered by Tsumugi Shirogane, and fans may not believe this part of her character is canonical.
