Shirase Buichirō is an unpopular character in the Bungou Stray Dogs fandom. He appears in Dazai, Chuuya, Age Fifteen, Stormbringer, and the anime.

In Canon

Pre-canon, Shirase, already a member of the Sheep at seven or eight, met Chuuya not long after Chuuya was broken out of the facility. In Fifteen and the anime, Shirase and Yuan encounter Chuuya and Dazai in the arcade. When the Sheep decide Chuuya needed to be killed, Shirase is tasked with doing so. However, Chuuya cares about the Sheep despite their betrayal, and when Verlaine begins targeting people with connections to Chuuya in Stormbringer, it is feared that Shirase may be on the list. While he frequently complains, rambles about what a good leader he would be, and forces Chuuya and Adam Frankenstein to protect him, Shirase gains a greater understanding of Chuuya's struggles and ultimately helps them. He parts from Chuuya on friendly terms to go to England.

In Fandom

Shirase is most frequently used in fan works as a stock villain, appearing as Chuuya's horrible ex or non-endgame boyfriend in AUs. This is likely due to Fifteen having come out in 2018 and Stormbringer having come out in 2021: by the time he was given a redemption arc, there were countless fanworks with harsh characterizations of him based on the limited information which had been available, and many people's opinions of him were set. Additionally, Stormbringer has not been animated and Shirase has not yet appeared in its manga adaptation. He is viewed by many as a traitor who was only using Chuuya. On the other hand, some view him and the other Sheep as victims of horrible circumstances who were trying to survive while desperately afraid and not emotionally mature. This view has also received backlash from those who believe his actions are sugarcoated too greatly.

In more sympathetic portrayals, Shirase often appears as Chuuya's childhood friend and sometimes also first kiss or first boyfriend who he didn't have much of a relationship with but who wasn't awful. He is occasionally sincerely shipped with Chuuya or with Yuan.

Regardless of whether his portrayal is sympathetic, he is often connected with Yuan in fanworks, since they appear together in canon.
