Conclusions

Before the musical was released in 1990, most mentions of Jekyll and Hyde appear in Science Fiction zines, typically as reviews of adaptations.

  • There was no unified fandom for Jekyll and Hyde, therefore no specific fanzines, fanfic, etc.
  • At this point, fans of Jekyll and Hyde are fans of horror, science fiction, and old or gothic literature in general
  • Adaptations dominate all mentions of Jekyll and Hyde, including in magazine publications

After the musical was released, and with the creation of the internet, most spaces mentioning Jekyll and Hyde specifically mention the musical.

  • Most early fanfiction takes place in the musical universe
  • Most early tumblr posts are screenshots, videos, or audio files from the musical
  • The musical generated a surge in fans of Jekyll and Hyde among fans of musicals

Sage Cotugno joins tumblr in 2011, and starts posting art of Paraphernalia

  • Fanart of Sage's version of Jekyll and Rachel starts to arise, as does Billy's character Robert
  • Musical still dominates the space, but cult following of Sage starts to arise

Sage publishes Bleeding Heart in 2014, and The Glass Scientists in 2015

  • Fanart and mentions of the characters start gaining more traction
  • The Glass Scientists starts dominating the space over the musical
  • Due to TGS being posted weekly, fans are very active

Ten years after the release of The Glass Scientists, the two fandoms (Jekyll and Hyde and TGS) have intertwined greatly. The musical is still extremely popular, but TGS overwhelmingly dominates the space. Not only this, but the original novella has also risen in popularity. Prior to 2015, few mentions of Jekyll and Hyde within fandom referred to the novella, and if they did, it was fleeting. Now, fanart, fanfiction, and plain text posts about the original novella compete with the popularity of TGS.

  • The Jekyll & Hyde musical lead to the creation of a small fandom which dominated Jekyll and Hyde fanculture for years
  • The Glass Scientists lead to the creation of a relatively larger, extremely active fandom which took over the space from the musical
  • TGS led to the original novella gaining popularity outside of other adaptations
  • Because TGS, and to a lesser extent the musical, were the initiators for Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde gaining its own fandom, these adaptations are inextricably tied to the fanculture surrounding it.
