Winter Soldier AU is a fanwork that features someone other than Bucky Barnes as the Winter Soldier, thus making it an alternate universe. It is sometimes combined with a Captain America AU (where someone other than Steve Rogers is Captain America) in a sort of Role Reversal AU.

A number of different characters have been featured as the Winter Soldier in various fanworks. Steve Rogers, Peggy Carter, and Natasha Romanov seem to be the most common.
