Fire Emblem Warriors is a 2017 Nintendo Switch/3DS game. It is a crossover of the Fire Emblem and Dynasty Warriors franchises, following up Hyrule Warriors, a Legend of Zelda/Dynasty Warriors crossover. Fire Emblem Warriors features a handful of new characters, but its cast largely consists of fan favorite characters from previous Fire Emblem games (mostly characters from Fire Emblem Awakening, Fire Emblem Fates, and the FE games set in Archanea). Fire Emblem Warriors received a sequel Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes for the Switch in 2022 (though Three Hopes features no characters or plot elements from the 2017 game, instead telling a new story with the cast and setting of Fire Emblem: Three Houses).[1]
Story Overview and Characters
The plot involves original characters Rowan and Lianna battling the evil prince Darios with the assistance of numerous Fire Emblem characters.
Some major characters include:[1]
- Rowan & Lianna: twin lords, the protagonists
- Darios: the main antagonist
- Chrom, Robin, and Lucina from Awakening
- Corrin, Azura, Xander, Ryoma, Leo, Takumi, and Camilla from Fates
- Marth and Caeda from the Archanea games

Fan reception and backlash
Fire Emblem Warriors was met with backlash from a large segment of the Fire Emblem fandom from reveal to its launch, largely concerning its character roster. Warriors released in the context of heightened backlash regarding the "Fateswakening" (or "AwakeFates") era of the franchise. Many old guard fans did not like the direction the series took with the most recent mainline games, Awakening and Fates (old school fans decried the series inclusion of casual mode, the "waifu"/"husbando" dating sim aspects, the adoption of more anime-esque elements, and fan service content incorporated into the design of characters like Camilla and Tharja, both of whom ended up being included in the Warriors roster). In comparison to Hyrule Warriors, which featured a huge cast full of extremely obscure Zelda characters from across the series, Fire Emblem Warriors' choice to primarily focus on the "Fateswakening" cast (with a few Archanean characters from FE1/FE3/FE11/FE12) provoked outrage from fans, who wished to see characters representing Path of Radiance, Radiant Dawn, Sacred Stones, Blazing Blade, Binding Blade, Thracia 776, Genealogy of the Holy War, etc. The DLC for Warriors seemingly attempted to address complaints about the roster, including more Archanea characters, Lyn from FE7, and Celica from Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia (an FE2 remake that released on 3DS very close to Warriors). However, the DLC also added more Awakening and Fates characters. Fans of the "Fateswakening" games and cast were naturally more receptive to Warriors. Regardless, Warriors has been largely forgotten in FE fan spaces today, overshadowed by its follow-up, Three Hopes.[2][3][4]
Shipping
Shippers (like most FE fans) largely ignored the original characters such as Rowan, Lianna, and Darios (even the seemingly inevitable twincest ship between Rowan and Lianna never gained much traction). The most shippers got from Warriors were more interactions from fan favorite ships that originated with Awakening and Fates. These include Chrom/Robin, Niles/Leo, Corrin/Azura, Lucina/Robin, Robin/Tharja, Corrin/Robin, Corrin/Xander, Corrin/Ryoma, Corrin/Camilla, Ryoma/Xander, Leo/Takumi, and more.[5]
