Karolina/Nico is a femslash pairing of Karolina Dean and Nico Minoru from the comic series Runaways and televsion show by the same name.
Canon
Comic
Their friendship is an occasionally strained one, due to Karolina's unrequited feelings towards Nico and Nico's conflicted feelings towards Karolina's other relationships. When the Runaways re-banded as a group two years later, Nico made romantic overtures towards Karolina, ultimately attempting to kiss her. However, Karolina rejected Nico out loyalty to Julie Power. Following Julie and Karolina's break-up, Karolina invited Nico to attend a charity ball with her. While there, Nico confessed her feelings for Karolina and the two kissed, beginning a relationship.[1]
Marvel's Runways
Similar to the comic series, it was shown early in season 1 that Karolina had a crush on Nico. Gert confronted Karolina about her crush, which Karolina denied, accusing Gert of being jealous of Chase and Karolina's relationship. However as Karolina came to terms with her feelings she went on to kiss Nico after fearing she would not get another chance due to the looming doomsday. The two appear to be together as a couple by the finale.
Fandom
Karolina/Nico was a fairly common pairing in the early days of the Runaways fandom due to Karolina's obvious crush on Nico. The pairing became rarer after Xavin was introduced as Karolina's partner, however the somewhat unresolved tension in their relationship kept many fans speculating whether they would go canon. While pairing names were not very popluar at the time, Nicolina was occasionally used.
As the TV series began to air in 2017 there was hope among those who shipped the pairing that the Hulu adaptation would have Karolina's feelings for Nico be reciprocated, unlike in the comic where they remained unrequited. They gained a new pairing name, Deanoru, and after sharing a kiss in episode 9 and again in the finale there was a burst of fanworks created in the form of fanart, picspams, gifsets and fanfiction. Activity around the "deanoru" tag on Tumblr post-finale had them debut at No. 7 of the top 20 ships that week.[2]
When the couple also became canon later that year within the comics it was also celebrated, often being referred to as the "15 year slow burn"[3]
