Matt is a Team Aqua Admin who debuted in 2002's Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire. He received a major redesign in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire along with his fellow Aqua Admin Shelly. Him, Shelly and Archie are often in fanworks together, since they are the three named members of Team Aqua.
His Team Magma counterpart is Tabitha.

- Matt is most commonly paired up with Archie, forming SailorShipping[1], which is Male/Male, aka yaoi. In Japanese, this is most often called ウシアオ (Ushiao), meaning Matt is the seme and Archie is the uke in the coupling.
- The opposite is also commonly shipped and is written as アオウシ (Aoushi).
- Matt is also shipped with Tabitha, forming GaslightShipping, which is Male/Male, aka yaoi. In Japanese, this is most often called ウシホム (Ushihomu), meaning Matt is the seme and Tabitha is the uke in the coupling.
